NOAA Selects EOS Defense Systems USA to Provide Electro Optic Data and Satellite Laser Ranging Data

EOS Defense Systems USA, Inc. (EOSDS USA) has been awarded two contracts with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Space Commerce. The first contract will provide commercial satellite laser ranging (SLR) data for NOAA’s Open Architecture Data Repository, with the second contract providing passive electro-optical observations.

In order to respond to the ever-increasing number of space objects orbiting the Earth, NOAA is dedicated to advancing space traffic management and Space Situational Awareness (SSA) capabilities. NOAA is continuing the effort to establish an Open Architecture SSA Data Repository and conduct pilots, prototypes and experiments to fulfill its obligations under Space Policy Directive 3, enacted June of 2018. These efforts will facilitate the safe operation of space-based vehicles.

Australian-based Electro Optic Systems Pty Ltd (EOS) has been a global leader in Space Domain Awareness (SDA), tracking and characterization of space objects and orbital debris mitigation for more than 35 years. EOS offers unmatched accuracy, sensitivity and a low cost per track, allowing for frequent tracking of each object and highly accurate catalogues of space debris. EOS provides tracking of small, dim and far space objects, offering accurate daytime and night-time surveillance from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to beyond Geosynchronous Orbit (xGEO). This technology enables EOS to provide highly accurate collision warnings and actionable information to satellite operators.

Although EOS has provided SDA infrastructure, including lasers, telescopes and beam directors to allies and partners globally, this award is the first opportunity for EOSDS USA to represent EOS to the US government.

“EOSDS USA is pleased to offer this capability to NOAA to advance US Space Domain Awareness capabilities and ultimately help protect future space missions,” said retired Brig. Gen. Phil Coker, CEO of EOSDS USA. “After decades of being a global leader in Space Situational Awareness, we’re proud to bring this exceptional technology to the US.”

Over the past three years EOS has made significant contributions to the US-led Sprint Advanced Concept Training (SACT) exercises, responding in real-time alongside international participants to a variety of simulated and actual space events. Most recently, EOS showed its proficiency in SDA, supplying SACT Operations with high-fidelity, near-time images, tracking and light curve data for the entire event. They also recorded and analyzed several live rendezvous and proximity operation incidents between orbiting objects that occurred during the exercises. EOS will build upon this experience to assist NOAA in advancing US space traffic management and SSA capabilities.
